Swim with Whales in Vava’u, Tonga - 2024

Crystal waters, unforgettable moments, and the magic of connection.

This season has been nothing short of phenomenal. With clear skies and even clearer water, Tonga 2024 delivered some of the most incredible interactions we’ve had to date – from playful Humpback Whales and their calves to close passes from pods of Pilot Whales.

The 2024 swim with whales season in Vava’u, Tonga delivered a series of intimate and unforgettable in-water encounters.

Each swim was different. That’s the beauty of these expeditions. Whether it was a calf practicing tail slaps or a quiet drift alongside a resting mother, every moment in the water held its own kind of magic.

We kicked off the trip by exploring the atolls and looking for whales to swim and interact with followed by a snorkel at the iconic Swallows Cave. The afternoon light poured through the opening, illuminating thousands of baitfish and turning the space into a dreamlike underwater cathedral. It was the perfect way to start our journey.

Day two brought more whale encounters – a mother and young calf moving slowly through the shallows. These gentle giants moved with such grace and curiosity, giving our small group the chance to experience just how intimate and respectful these interactions can be.

This year was particularly special, as I was joined by Ash and our kids. Watching them experience the wonder of Tonga – the whales, the reef, the culture – added a whole new layer to the trip. It reminded me why I started sharing these experiences in the first place.

If swimming with whales is on your bucket list, there’s truly no better place than Vava’u. Warm clear water, the experience of the local crew, and the gentle, respectful approach to the whales all create something unforgettable.
